Among Practitioners, there are technicians and artisans. Technicians learn formulas from a book, then apply them over and over, like a cook that makes the same recipes every time. Artisans go above and beyond this – an artisan will learn the principles and ‘rules’ from books, then learn to expand beyond them. The artisan is like the chef who can improvise in addition to memorize, who can pay attention to flavors and create the perfect dish from scratch for any occasion.
There are lots of technicians in the healing arts: there are fewer artisans.
Mythic Acupuncture is fully committed to the artisan path. Every single person is a unique work of art, the only one just like them. For this reason, there is no ‘one size fits all’ recipe, which is why we work to create fully customized treatment sessions for every one of our clients.
Scott Hillsman created a special model for describing the stages of healing that use at Mythic Acupuncture. This is called:
The TRN Model
Each letter reflects one of three critical points of focus in the healing journey.
1. Restoration. Following an injury or illness, restoration is the stage where normal function is regained. Healing focuses on addressing problems starting with the most severe.
2. Nourishment. When ordinary function has been restored, treatment focus may become more big-picture, as we look to maintain good health and nourish one’s inner resources.
3. Transformation. The ultimate goal of healing. Transformation is about setting intentions and reaching new goals. One’s healing path may start with a crisis, and in the process of transforming old patterns, there is opportunity to unlock greater states of empowerment and wellbeing than was experienced before.
So healing often naturally flows from restoration to nourishment to transformation – although one may find themselves focused on any one of these areas at different times. At Mythic Acupuncture, we have tools and treatment strategies for every point on the TRN Wheel.

There will be a few pages of paperwork to fill out – this paperwork will be on a clipboard in the lobby when you arrive. After completing that, you’ll be meet with the practitioner where you’ll have a comprehensive evaluation and be able to discuss any health concerns and current problems. This is also a good time to ask any questions you have. The practitioner will put together a plan for your first treatment(s) and discuss this with you. Then often on the same day you will be begin receiving care. This may look like receiving bodywork (similar to medical massage), acupuncture, other modalities like craniosacral and energy work, or receiving an herbal prescription. At the end of the session, you’ll be able to discuss scheduling and a follow up care-plan.
For your first session plan for an hour and a half (this gives extra time for paperwork and an initial assessment.) Follow up sessions are about an hour.
Each visit you’ll have an opportunity to meet with the practitioner, report any changes, concerns or things you’d like to address. Then you’ll receive some form of care, often bodywork and acupuncture, for the rest of the appointment. You may receive updates to herbal prescriptions, if relevant. Every person’s sessions are custom designed for their needs. All services and consultation are included in the single service fee.
True Healing is always the goal. Every case is unique so it is not possible to make a guarantee about what each person can experience. However, we’ve seen acupuncture and TCM promote full restoration of natural functions for many injuries, and help restore long-term balance to inner systems for various health concerns. Please inquire about what these therapies may be able to do for you.
Everyone is different. Some conditions will show vast improvement in as little as one session. Many times, multiple visits are recommended to achieve needed therapeutic goals. Common treatment plans are measured in 6, 8 or 10 session increments. Some people will come in once a week for a while, and others will have appointments once a month. This is something that can be discussed on your first visit with your provider.
Acupuncture needles are totally different than a regular hypodermic syringe (i.e. vaccine needles.) Because acupuncture needles are so thin, most people find them easy to tolerate. It’s possible to feel all kinds of sensations with acupuncture: deep pressure, slight soreness, a feeling of water or electricity flowing through the body, warmth or waves of tingling are all common experiences. Some people feel nothing at all. Overall, acupuncture is a very relaxing experience for most people. If you have any fear of needles, please discuss this with your provider beforehand – there are all kinds of approaches that we can use to minimize discomfort and make this a good experience for you.
Always feel free to let your provider know what is working well for you, and what you’d like to focus on. Also please know that Mythic Acupuncture is a healing center, not a spa. We feel this is an important distinction: A spa offers a menu of services and customers request to purchase a “facial” or “massage” or other service. At a healing center, the focus is on a custom treatment plan that is put together intentionally, and so it functions in a different way. We will always adjust your treatment plan to focus on your needs and the modalities that work well for you, however this is done in alignment with the provider’s expertise to optimize healing results.
Dry Needling is a very simple form of acupuncture. Some practitioners who perform ‘dry needling’ do so with very little training in how to needle people. By contrast Scott Hillsman L.Ac (and many of his colleagues) went to school for at least three years, and attained at least a Master’s Degree in these medicines. The methods of acupuncture include all the same basic techniques used in dry needling AND a great deal more techniques too.
This could be a long conversation! There are many theories both ancient and modern. The ancient world discusses how acupuncture (as well as herbs and other therapies) affect the vital currents of energy that flow through the body. It’s easy to see with modern science that acupuncture has a powerful effect on the nervous system and can also be used to release muscular tension.
Scott Hillsman L.Ac.’s education & credentials include the following:

No – in fact, people who show up early are sometimes unable to enter, since staff may be away from the building. For your first visit, you may be asked to show up a few minutes early for paperwork. However, on most occasions the appointment will begin right on time.
